Serving in silence

Today's readings
Tomorrow's readings

"The singers, the sons of Asaph, were in their place according to the command of David, and Asaph, and Heman, and Jeduthun the king's seer; and the gatekeepers were at each gate. They did not need to depart from their service, for their brothers the Levites prepared for them." 2 Chron 35:15

The bold emphasis is mine in the above Scripture because I was struck with the fact that I often forget such service. The Levites prepared the needs of those in service to the Passover feast so that the appropriate worship might be given to the Lord. At every church there are people that serve in silence and without them the services could not take place. The most visible of those would be the cleaning staff and the physical plant people and I remember to pray for them when I see them. But to my shame I do not remember the people that make the coffee, or prepare the communion, or serve in the media center, or the teachers of the Sunday schools, or the secretarial staff, or the drivers of the vans that pick up those who cannot make it on their own or the thousand other jobs that I dont even know about. Those people enable the service and the worship of God to proceed when it otherwise would not in the manner that it does. And I take them for granted. It is hard to write such a sentence but it is true. How many times have I walked by someone in such service and not even uttered a short kind word. People who serve as they do, do so for the love of the Lord but a kind word means all the difference some days. I am so busy heading to teach somewhere or focused on my own needs that I neglect those around me much to my detriment and theirs. But I have a Savior to whom I can confess and I do so now. May He strengthen me and all of us to recognize those who serve and praise God for them.
